What do sixth and seventh receive – Premier League European places explained

The race for a European place continues in the Premier League as we head into the final day this Sunday.

Aston Villa secured the last place in the Champions League in midweek after Manchester City beat Tottenham on Tuesday.

However, things can still chop and change for the remaining spots in the top seven and it is set to be an exciting end to the campaign.

Here, talkSPORT.com takes a look at which positions will qualify for Europe next season…

The Champions League spots have already been confirmed before the final day.

Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Villa will all be competing in UEFA’s elite tournament next season.

Fifth place guarantees a place in the Europa League and that it still to be decided.

Tottenham will be playing on the continent next season but the competition they will be joining is not confirmed yet.

They are looking set to claim a Europa League place, however, Chelsea’s late charge has put them within three points with one game to go.

If the Blues beat Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge and Ange Postecoglou’s side lose to Sheffield United live on talkSPORT 2, they will qualify.

Teams to qualify for Europe

  • Manchester City – Champions League
  • Arsenal – Champions League
  • Liverpool – Champions League
  • Aston Villa – Champions League
  • Tottenham – Europa League / Europa Conference League
  • Chelsea – Europa League / Europa Conference League / None
  • Newcastle – Europa League / Europa Conference League / None
  • Manchester United – Europa League / Europa Conference League / None

All Spurs need is a draw at their already-relegated opponent though, so it remains likely that they will finish in fifth.

Whichever team comes sixth also has the chance to play in the Europa League next season.

Gabby Agbonlahor shocked that Tottenham Hotspur fans and Jamie O’Hara wanted to lose to Manchester City meaning Aston Villa clinched Champions League football and calls it ‘small club mentality’

If Man City win the FA Cup, sixth will become a Europa League place and the Europa Conference League spot will drop to seventh.

So that means seventh place will qualify for Europe if City come out on top at Wembley.

However, if Manchester United win in the FA Cup final, they will automatically claim a spot in UEFA’s secondary competition.

And that would therefore mean that seventh doesn’t qualify for Europe, leaving sixth as a Europa Conference League place.

Man United’s best chance of qualification comes in the cup, as they are three points and a huge amount of goal difference behind sixth in the league.

Newcastle also remain in the race and currently occupy seventh, needing Man City to win the FA Cup or to win their last game while Chelsea lose to qualify.
