Laver Cup: Team Europe squad confirmed – with no Novak Djokovic or Jannik Sinner

The Team Europe squad for the 2024 Laver Cup has been confirmed – with both world No 1 Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic choosing to skip the event.

Three-time Grand Slam runner-up Casper Ruud and two-time major finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas have both been confirmed as the final two players for Team Europe for the seventh edition of the event, to be held in Berlin.

Ruud and Tsitsipas will join Rafael Nadal, home star Alexander Zverev, French Open and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, and former world No 1 Daniil Medvedev in the team.

After defeat in London in 2022 and Vancouver in 2023, Europe will hope to regain the title after four previous victories in the opening four editions of the event.

It will be the final time that 11-time Grand Slam champion Bjorn Borg captains the squad, with Yannick Noah taking over the captaincy in 2025.

“Casper and Stefanos are experienced Laver Cup players who know what it takes to win points,” said Borg.

“They have been part of some intense battles and have raised the Cup in the past. I am happy to have them on the team.”

Ruud and Tsitispas are both regulars in the Laver Cup squad, with this being the fourth Team Europe appearance for both men.

Former world No 2 Ruud made his debut in 2021 and has played every event since, and he is yet to lose a rubber for his team.

Tsitsipas, meanwhile, made his first Laver Cup appearance in 2019 and will be back in action after skipping last year’s event in Canada.

The selection of Ruud and Tsitsipas – both of whom have won titles this year – completes what is a strong line-up for Europe.

However, it might come as a disappointment to some that Sinner and Djokovic – currently the top two players in the ATP Rankings – will not compete.

Sinner is yet to play in the competition, while Djokovic has played in 2018 and 2022.

Organisers will be hoping that the star power of Alcaraz and Nadal, alongside home player Zverev, is enough to attract fans to the event.

Meanwhile, Team World is yet to confirm its full squad.

Captained by John McEnroe – who will be replaced by Andre Agassi in 2025 – the squad will currently be led by world No 6 Alex de Minaur.

Joining him are three American stars – Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Frances Tiafoe – with two spots still up for grabs.
