There is one day to go in the Solheim Cup as the best players from the United States and Europe face off at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia.
Team USA is looking to win the Solheim Cup for the first time since 2017, with the Europeans retaining the Cup last year after the competition ended in a 14-14 draw.
After day one of the 19th edition this week, the Americans claimed a commanding 6-2 lead following the morning foursomes and afternoon four ball. The Europeans had a better day on Saturday during more foursomes and four ball sessions, but they couldn’t reduce the US lead, so we head to the Sunday singles with the hosts leading 10-6 and firm favorites to win.
World No. 1 Nelly Korda, Rose Zhang and rookies Lauren Coughlin and Sarah Schmelzel all won two points for the USA on Friday.
Korda was paired with Allisen Corpuz in the first match of the event, and claimed a 3&2 win against Charley Hull and Esther Henseleit.
The American pairs of Zhang/Coughlin and Lilia Vu/Schmelzel also won their matches 3&2, while Maja Stark and Emily Pedersen were the only European duo to claim a victory in the morning session.
Team USA continued their ascendancy in the afternoon, with Korda/Megan Khang, Coughlin/Schmelzel and Andrea Lee/Zhang winning their matches comfortably.
Anna Nordqvist and Madelene Sagstrom managed to claim another point for Europe in the fourballs, beating Lee and Lexi Thompson 6&5.
Team USA’s lead was the largest in the history of the Solheim Cup after the opening day.
Europe got off to a strong start on Saturday morning, but were only able to draw the second foursomes session 2-2 with the USA.
Nordqvist earned her second point for Europe alongside Celine Boutier in a 4&3 win over Vu/Schmelzel, while Henseleit/Hull claimed their first wins against Ally Ewing/Jennifer Kupcho.
Corpuz/Korda claimed their second win as a pair for the Americans, while Thompson/Coughlin earned the other point.
It was a similar story in the Saturday afternoon four ball session, where Alison Lee and Megan Khang got the better of Anna Nordqvist and Madelene Sagstrom, before Andrea Lee and Rose Zhang won 6&4 against Linn Grant and Celine Boutier.
However, the Europeans kept their hopes intact with Carlota Ciganda and Emily Pedersen’s 2&1 triumph of Ally Ewing and Lexi Thompson before the English pair of Georgia Hall and Charley Hull saw off the challenge of Allisen Corpuz and Lilia Vu.
US players Korda, Coughlin and Zhang lead the way in points won with three apiece, while for the Europeans, Nordqvist, Hull and Pedersen each have two.
The USA now needs just 4.5 points from the 12 available on Sunday to win the Cup for the first time in seven years, with Europe requiring eight to retain the trophy.
Here are the individual points records for the 24 Solheim Cup players with one session to come.
