Medal success in Europe for Drogheda Wheelers rider Ciara

Success in Europe – Ciara O’Connor from Drogheda Wheelers.

Drogheda Independent

DROGHEDA Wheelers youth rider Ciara O’Connor raced to the podium in Baal in Belgium at the weekend when securing third place in the prestigious Balenberg Cyclocross U15 race.

Ciara (13) travelled to Belgium with the support of her local club following an invitation from the host Belgian club AA Drinks Young Lions. They are part of the famous professional Team Baloise Trek Lions who are managed by the twice world champion and Olympian Sven Nys.

The discipline of cyclocross sees riders race off-road, negotiating hills of steps, jumping boards, sand pits and tricky descents and overall muddy conditions in a relentless fast-paced race. Ciara regularly competes in both cyclocross and mountain biking in the yellow and blue colours of Drogheda Wheelers at provincial and national levels and now internationally.

She is particularly looking forward to competing in the youth races at a round of the Cyclocross World Cup which comes to Dublin in December this year, as well as a full programme of racing at National level.

Drogheda Wheelers is a prominent and well-established cycling club and is the promoter of many races on the Irish cycling calendar.

The club has groups at leisure, intermediate racing and youth levels and parents of enthusiastic young cyclists can find out more information about Drogheda Wheelers by contacting youth@droghedawheelers.ie
