Potential timeline revealed as Wrexham wait on plans for Welsh entry into European football

The Wrexham owners have overseen a monumental rise in the last few years, with back-to-back promotions landing them in League One.

And Phil Parkinson doesn’t look as though he’s stopping there; the Dragons boss has his side in 2nd place of the League One table as things stand.

Last time out, Wrexham beat Wolves’ U21s in the EFL Trophy as they chase what would be their first domestic cup win (not including league titles) under Reynolds and McElhenney.

And one day soon, Wrexham may even be competing for European silverware, with plans to get Welsh sides back on the European scene.

Potential timeline revealed as Wrexham wait on Welsh League Cup plans

Last month, it was revealed that there are plans to revamp the Welsh League Cup, so to include entry into the Europa Conference League as the ultimate prize for the winning team.

It’s another exciting future possibility for Wrexham as they further implement their brand on the world and European stage.

Now, The Athletic has shared some fresh insight on the topic, suggesting that ‘there’s a sense it could be given the go-ahead before the end of this calendar year’.

But caution has been urged with that potential timeframe, with the same report adding that said timeline is ambitious, ‘primarily due to existing commercial and broadcast contracts not expiring until the end of next season’.

Talks have been underway for some time, though. And they remain ongoing with the Welsh footballing authorities keen to see more representation in Europe.

Wrexham can’t get carried away amid European dream

Wrexham in Europe would be the absolute icing on the cake for Reynolds and McElhenny.

Reaching the Premier League is one thing, but representing Wales in Europe would be a different achievement, and it would arguably make for more memorable moments for fans.

Playing away in Europe is something that the young Wrexham fans of today can’t imagine. And now, its a very real possibility.

But Parkinson and indeed the fanbase must remain focussed on the here and now.

Wrexham are still in League One. Although they’re doing very well, it’s still a long season ahead, and then there’s the Championship to potentially contend with, which is a whole new beast.
