Liverpool and Newcastle United have reportedly identified the same Bundesliga defender as a potential transfer target.
The two English giants have made contrasting starts to the new campaign, Liverpool sitting top of the Premier League standings and Newcastle being down in ninth place.
Nevertheless, they each possess two of the stronger defensive records in the division, Arne Slot‘s side conceding just three times while Eddie Howe‘s team have shipped only eight strikes.
Despite those impressive numbers over an eight-match period, there are reasons for both clubs to add to their ranks at the back as soon as possible.

Manchester United are reportedly prepared to consider certain offers for winger Antony during the January transfer window.
The Brazil international has just started his third season at Old Trafford having made an £86m switch from Ajax in the summer of 2022.
However, despite the anticipation that the 24-year-old would become a mainstay in the team under Erik ten Hag, it has proven to be the exact opposite.
Although Antony has 86 appearances in all competitions to his name, a considerable number of outings have come from the substitutes’ bench.

Arsenal are reportedly prepared to launch a move to sign Brentford‘s Bryan Mbeumo in the January transfer window.
Last month, it was reported that Mbeumo was attracting interest from the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool.
The Cameroon international is garnering plenty of attention after making an impressive start to the 2024-25 season.
Mbeumo has racked up six goals in eight Premier League appearances, leaving him in second place in the scoring charts alongside Chelsea’s Cole Palmer.
