Budget-friendly islands known as ‘Europe’s Hawaii’ are just two hour from UK

A Caribbean getaway may seem enticing, particularly as the weather turns chilly and the days grow shorter.

However, there’s a European alternative just two hours away from the UK that offers all the allure of island hopping, but at a fraction of the cost and effort.

The Azores, an archipelago in Portugal often referred to as “Europe’s Hawaii”, is a compelling choice.

Comprising nine major islands – Sao Miguel, Santa Maria, Terceira, Graciosa, Sao Jorge, Pico, Faial, Flores and Corvo – each one presents a unique experience.

From the thermal pools of Sao Miguel to the iconic cone of Pico Mountain, the Azores are a treasure trove for explorers.

The volcanic nature of the islands creates a dramatic and awe-inspiring landscape that shapes life there.

On a visit to Sao Miguel, you can immerse yourself in the stunning thermal pools where the same geothermal heat is used to cook the traditional cozido dos Acores (Azorean stew) in the Furnas area.

This local delicacy involves burying vegetables and meat in the ground for up to seven hours until it emerges piping hot.

Moreover, the Azores are recognised as one of the world’s top destinations for whale watching, with numerous species making the surrounding ocean their home, reports the Mirror.

While the peak season runs from April to October, your chances of spotting larger migratory species such as blue whales increase between the end of April and the beginning of May during their migration period.

To reach your destination, you’ll need to fly to Sao Miguel, the largest of the nine islands.

From there, you can either take a flight to the other islands or even board a ferry between them, taking in the breathtaking ocean views.

However, it’s important to note that as these islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean, weather conditions can lead to delays – particularly if you’re planning a visit during the shoulder season or winter months.

Therefore, flexibility in your travel plans is key.
