The £134 sleeper train ride that ends on one of the Europe’s best islands

Tourists can travel across the whole of Italy and arrive at one of Europe’s most beautiful destinations in less than one day for a little over £100. 

The Intercity Notte sleeper train service runs from Milan in northern Italy to the Sicilian capital of Palermo, passing 950 miles and some of the country’s most important landmarks. 

Overnight sleeper service trains will leave the busy Milan Centrale station and runs south to Genoa. 

Trains will then run non-stop for passengers to sleep as the line passes through Florence, Rome and Naples. 

Upon reaching Villa San Giovanni at the top of Italy, the locomotive is moved onto a ferry for the short crossing to Sicily.

The final stretch runs along Sicily’s beautiful north coast before reaching Palermo Centrale station less than a day after setting off. 

According to Rail Europe, operators run two services every day with the average journey expected to take around 21 and a half hours to complete. 

Each compartment has one to three single beds with ample storage space for suitcases and luggage. 

Each room comes with a sink however there is no private toilet and guests are required to use the public services located on each carriage. 

The rooms are fitted with power sockets, an intercom service, a call button for assistance, cupboards and a reading light. 

Rooms are also fitted with trains eating with views of the countryside with attendants regularly coming around to deliver snacks.

Two cabins can be combined to form a “suite” with six beds which could be ideal for larger families hoping to make the trip down South.

Couchettes are slightly cheaper with four folded beds for single and mixed-sex occupancy. 

These rooms come with pillows, sheets and blankets but do not include a washbasin or the extra luxuries of the private rooms.

According to Rail Europe, passengers who book the train around 20 days in advance should expect to pay around £134. 

However, prices can quickly rise with tickets around £263 for those who book just a week in advance of their trip.
