The event is organised by Oxford for Europe, a volunteer-run grassroots campaign group working to promote unity across Europe as part of the pro-EU movement.

The organisation said: “Professor Garton Ash is absolutely the person for whom the term ‘public intellectual’ was invented.

“We are privileged to be able to welcome him as a speaker and to have the opportunity of a question-and-answer session.”

Mr Garton Ash is considered the greatest living expert and reporter on the recent history of central Europe and believes that Britain belongs in Europe.

His talk will ask where Britain will stand in relation to Europe under Labour, and with a new president in the US.

He’s previously won the Charlemagne Medal, a prize awarded for work done in the service of European unification, was voted a Time magazine top 100 influential people, and regularly writes for national titles.

He’s published 10 widely-praised books, including his most recent memoir Homelands: A Personal History of Europe.
