Europe no longer the “center of the world,” says Josep Borrell

Europe has long ceased to be the “center of the world,” and its current position is fragile, outgoing EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in an interview with radio station RNE, according to Report.

“Europeans cannot continue to think that they are the center of the world, because that is not the case, we have not been for a long time,” he stated.

Borrell emphasized that Europe accounts for only 5% of the world’s population and has “lost weight in the global economy.”

He added, “We have a significant technological lag in advanced sectors, very low birth rates, and very weak defense.”

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has served as a wake-up call for the European Union, according to Borrell. “But it’s not just about waking up, it’s about getting up and getting to work, because times are tough and Europe’s position is fragile,” he said.

Borrell’s term as the EU’s foreign policy chief is set to end in November 2024
