The richest city in mainland Europe just two hours from the UK

While everyone knows that London is officially Europe’s richest city, a new report has revealed a different leader for mainland Europe in the rankings.

In good news, the huge financial hub is not very far from the capital with both cities connected by a direct train.

Paris in France now holds the title of the richest city in mainland Europe.

Known as the “City of Light,” Paris is a global hub of finance, fashion, culture, and commerce.

And, with a population of over 12 million in the Paris Region, the city contributes a staggering €765 billion (£660 billion) to the economy, making it the wealthiest area in the European Union.

What sets Paris apart is its concentration of wealth. According to Henley & Partners’ World’s Wealthiest Cities Report 2024, Paris has a huge number of high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs), defined as those with liquid assets worth $1 million or more.

According to the report, the French capital has 165,000 HNWIs, while London 227,000.

Getting to Paris from the UK is straightforward and quick. The Eurostar train service connects London to the French capital in just over two hours, with multiple departures daily.

What’s more, Paris is not only known as a financial hub but also has plenty of attractions to offer.

Its world-famous museums, including the Louvre, which welcomed nearly 9 million visitors in 2023, and landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame Cathedral, attract millions of tourists annually.

The city’s historic centre along the River Seine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its culinary scene is one of the best in the world.

The city also leads in infrastructure. Paris is a key transport hub with two major international airports – Charles de Gaulle and Orly – and the busy Gare du Nord railway station.

Its public transport system, including the Paris Metro, serves millions daily and is considered one of the most sustainable in the world.

Paris also recently hosted the 2024 Summer Olympics and is home to famous sports teams like Paris Saint-Germain.

On top of that, annual events such as the French Open at Roland Garros and the Tour de France draw international crowds.
