Adam Silver: “There is no specific plan right now about Europe”

Following the Board of Governors meeting in New York, NBA commissioner Adam Silver discussed several topics, including expansion options for the league.

Besides Seattle and Las Vegas, the NBA has been considering options for an expansion to Europe, as recently reaffirmed by Silver.

“There is no specific plan right now about Europe other than we are agreeing to look intensively at the opportunity,” he provided an update on Tuesday.

“Where we are in terms of the level of interest in basketball is not commensurate with the level of commercial activities,” added Silver, “The way all of us see it, it is not just about a basketball opportunity. We have been in this position in our league before where if you can not demonstrate to the market that you can run a successful business, it is not sustainable.”

On markets in the United States, Seattle and Las Vegas have been at the center of attention.

“There was not a lot of discussion in this meeting about expansion, but only largely not for lack of interest, it was that we had said to them that we’re not quite ready,” clarified the NBA commissioner.

In addition, Larry Tanenbaum was re-elected as the chairman of the Board of Governors. The governor of the Toronto Raptors has served in this role since being elected in 2017.

Also, the Board of Governors approved the expansion of the use of instant replay on out-of-bounds reviews following a coach challenge.
