Air India commences $400m fleet refit

Air India has commenced a US$400 million refit programme of 67 legacy aircraft in its fleet, starting with 27 narrow-body A320neos.

The overhaul will see the installation of a modern three-cabin configuration featuring new seats, carpets, curtains and upholstery. The first new-look A320s are expected to re-enter service in December this year, joining eight recently delivered A320neo aircraft that already feature the upgraded cabin.

New-look aircraft will comprise eight business class seats with a 40-inch pitch and 7-inch recline, 24 extra legroom seats in premium economy, and 132 seats in economy.

The refit of 40 widebody Boeing 787s and 777s is expected to begin in early 2025. Air India says it has selected ‘market-leading seats and inflight entertainment systems’ and interior designs are complete.

“The commencement of interior refit of the narrowbody fleet is an important step in our journey of enhancing the flying experience of our customers,” said Campbell Wilson, chief executive officer and managing director, Air India.

“Over time, all the legacy widebody aircraft will also be refitted. This comprehensive upgrade of Air India’s physical product is an important component of Air India transforming into a world-class airline.”
