Berlin opens EURO “Fan Mile” to kick off summer of football
On Wednesday evening, Berlin put on a concert as part of the official opening of the fan mile. The area in front of the Brandenburg Gate has space for between 50,000 and 100,000 fans, and is framed by an enormous custom-built goal which stands 22.5 metres high and 64.4 metres wide. A central location for fans to gather for public viewing during the European Football Championships, the fan mile will show the opening game on Friday at 21:00 when Germany, the hosts, play Scotland.

The area will remain closed off to car and bicycle traffic throughout the tournament, but traffic disruption during the games should be alleviated somewhat due to the fact that Berlin will run an increased public transport service. There will be more S-Bahn trains going to the Olympic Stadium on match days, as well as increased U-Bahn service on the U1, U2 and U5 lines. The six games taking place in Berlin during the EUROs fall on June 15, 21, 25, 29, July 6 – and then the final on July 14.
While fans from all over the world are welcome in the fan mile, the organisers have warned against political statements. No Israeli or Palestinian flags will be allowed in the fan zones of the European Championships; only those countries participating in the tournament will be permitted to fly their flags there.
