Boparan sells European poultry business

Boparan Holdings Limited (BHL) has sold its European Poultry business to the Boparan Private Office (BPO) – both organizations run by entrepreneur Ranjit Singh Boparan.

The deal is described as “significant and transformational” by the Holding’s 2 Sisters Food Group.

BHL and BPO are both based in the United Kingdom (U.K.). Also expected to help unlock future opportunities for both entities, the sale is reported to be worth more than EUR200 million (US$221million).

As part of BHL, the 2 Sisters Food Group will benefit from a significant reduction in its debt levels, opening up opportunities for future investment.

Furthermore, under BPO, the European poultry business will have a dedicated regional focus on markets in continental Europe.

“This will unlock growth opportunities through a focus on quality, animal welfare, and sustainability,” the company stated.

Completion of the deal is expected within the next month, and is subject to approval by Poland’s antitrust authority.

More on the Boparan European Poultry business

In July of 2010, Boparan Holdings Limited’s subsidiary 2 Sisters Food Group announced that it had completed its purchase of the Storteboom Group. The acquisition of the Dutch-based poultry processing business supported the new owner’s expansion into Central Europe through its processing facilities in Poland as well as The Netherlands.

In addition to six sites in The Netherlands, 2 Sisters Storteboom operated two sites in Poland, according to its website. It operated three slaughterhouses — in the Dutch towns of Kornhorn and Putten, and Kotowo in Poland. Facilities for processing poultry meat are located in Nijkerk, Zeewolde, and Barneveld in the Netherlands, and Polish operations in Kotowo and Komorniki.

With a workforce of around 2,700, the company processes around four million broilers each week into fresh, frozen, and cooked chicken ranges. Products are sold to Dutch and foreign retailers, as well as wholesalers and food processors. At the Barneveld facility, products are cooked for restaurant chains and retailers.

With annual slaughterings of 525 million birds, 2 Sisters Food Group was the second largest poultry company in Europe in 2023, according to WATTPoultry.com’s Top Poultry Companies survey.

As part of BHL, 2 Sisters Food Group is one of Britain’s largest food producers. It is among the 10 largest privately held companies in the U.K., supplying around one-third of all poultry products consumed in the country. Much of the production of its European Poultry business was shipped to the U.K.

Latest financial results published by 2 Sisters Food Group were for the year to July 29, 2023. At just over GBP1.52 billion (S$1.93 billion), turnover was up 6.7% year-on-year. This contributed to a reduction in the company’s operating loss to GBP15.65 million (before exceptional costs).

In 2016, BPO acquired Bernard Matthews, the U.K.-based turkey company. Six years later, England-based chicken producer Banham Poultry became part of BPO.
