Cairns Cup welcome party set for Sunday at Five Iron Golf
The Cairns Cup – a biannual tournament where golfers with disabilities from the United States and Europe compete – is coming to Macomb County.
Five Iron Golf in Shelby Township is gearing up to host a welcome party on Sunday, July 28 at 6 p.m. for those affiliated with the event, which begins the same day and will run through Aug. 3 at Cherry Creek Golf Club.
The tournament features co-ed match play throughout the week and is named after Billy Cairns, a disabled golfer who tragically passed away while traveling with his European golf team for an event. The cup was eventually started to honor his memory.
The event at Five Iron will be attended by several notable people within the Cairns Cup community; competitors, including Team USA Captain Kim Moore and Team Europe Captain Tineke Loogman, will be present. Ryan Miller and John Donelson, who are the general and assistant managers, respectively, at Five Iron in Shelby, are expected to be in attendance. PGA instructor Jeremy Hayward, European and USA Cairns Cup Vice Presidents Kevin Booth and John Bell, Cairns Cup CEO Ian Halliwell and Sun Mountain Sport CEO Grant Knudson will all be present, too.
The mission statement behind the Cairns Cup is “to celebrate and promote excellence in adaptive golf by organizing a world-class tournament that showcases the exceptional skills and achievements of adaptive players.” Their hope is to encourage more persons of disabilities to pursue their passion for golf and, in turn, breaking barriers in the adaptive golf world.
Five Iron Golf is a leader in indoor golf and entertainment with 30 locations across 13 states and four countries. They pride themselves in their simulation, amenities, instruction and community feel to provide a dynamic atmosphere for playing, practicing and partying.
