Cheapest city for beer in the world is in Europe – tipple costs as little as 65p

It’s the news beer lovers have all been waiting for – a study has found the location of the cheapest beer on earth.

Sadly for Brits, the UK’s most cost-effective city for a tipple was Nottingham in 99th place – where a drink will set you back a modest £1.63. On the continent, however, it’s an entirely different story.

Italy, Germany and Spain were ranked as having the cheapest prices for a bottle of beer, according to the experts at Magnet Kitchens. The study analysed 190 cities using crowdsourced data from Numbeo on the cost of a bottle of beer in cities around the world in 2024.

The top 10 was dominated by Germany, with Wandsbek in the north of the country found to be the tenth best-value – with a bottle setting revellers back an impressively low 74p. Nuremberg, Bielefeld and Bremen tied at a penny less, whilst Zaragoza, in the northeast of Spain and known as the ‘city of beer’, offered an attractive 72p ale.

Four more German cities came in joint-second, with 71p bottles in Wuppertal, Bochum, Bochum-Hordel and Dresden. However, it was a coastal city in the south of Italy that stole the crown – where punters can sink a beer from as little as 65p.

According to Numbeo, beer in Taranto offers is a staggering 11.5 times cheaper than the world’s most expensive – found in Darwin, Australia (£7.48). It was the only Italian city to break the top 10, while the country’s next-ranking town was Messina, a harbour city in the northeast of Sicily which placed 51st.

Taranto also placed in the top 10 for the cheapest bottle of wine globally, coming seventh with a price of £3.87 – beaten by the world’s cheapest, Rome, at just £2.80.

A staggering 20 German cities made the top 50 for beer, whilst for those who prefer wine, eight locations in the country also made the top 30 – including Bochum where a bottle will set you back £4.29.

Zaragoza proved to be more than two times cheaper than the most expensive Spanish city, which was Cordoba with a price of £1.57 for a bottle of beer.

In all,18 Spanish cities ranked in the top 50, with Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria, coming second on 77p – just outside the worldwide top 10.
