Ecommerce in the Czech Republic

As in most European countries, ecommerce in the Czech Republic has been growing in the last ten years. However, after an all-time high revenue in 2021, the market has been in a slump. In the two years after that, the online turnover has even decreased.

Online shopping has become very widespread among consumers in the Czech Republic. According to Statista, 86 percent of the total population has access to the internet. In 2015, only 31.8 percent of those internet users would shop online. However, by 2023, that share had grown to 72.5 percent. This is still below the European average of 75 percent.

Women shop online more often than men, with respectively 63.4 and 62.4 percent in 2023. Compared to the year before, the share of men shopping online increased one percent. At the same time, the share of women rose by almost four percent.

FREQUENCY – In a study conducted in 2023, at least 23.56 percent of Czechs placed between three and five online purchases in the three months up to that research. Another 12 percent bought goods or services online more than ten times in that period.

CROSS-BORDER – Online shoppers in the Czech Republic prefer to shop at domestic online stores. In 2023, 89.1 percent of people who had shopped online in the three months leading up to the research, placed orders at local online sellers. And 35.6 percent placed orders at online stores from other EU countries. And almost 16.6 percent bought from non-EU sellers.

The ecommerce market in the Czech Republic

In 2021, the total online revenue in the Czech Republic reached 8.8 billion euros (223 billion Czech koruna). This was an all-time high. However, since then, the market has decreased in value. In 2023, the total online revenue reached 7.3 billion euros (185 billion Czech koruna). This was the second year in a row that online revenue decreased.

PRODUCT CATEGORIES – In terms of revenue, sales in the product category Hobby & Leisure are the highest when compared to other product categories. This category accounts for 26.3 percent of all ecommerce revenue in the country, according to statistics website EcommerceDB.

Electronics comes in second, with 20.7 percent. It is followed by Fashion, with 17.3 percent. After that comes Furniture & Homeware, Care Products, DIY and Grocery (with respectively 11.7, 9.4, 8.9 and 5.7 percent).

Big online stores in the Czech Republic

Czechia has some major online retailers. Among them is Alza.cz, which sells all kinds of consumer electronics online. In 2023, it generated 1.06 billion euros in turnover. Another major ecommerce company is online department store Mall.cz, which generated 231.3 million euros in 2023. Supermarket Rohlik.cz also has a very strong presence online, it generated 409.9 million euros in 2023.
