EU allocates 32 million euros for infrastructure upgrades in Moldova
The European Union (EU) assigned a tender for 32 million euros for the upgrade of the so-called North-South corridor in Moldova. The tender was won by Greek Obermeyer Hellas and German DB Engineering&Consulting.
The project entails “the provision of the services of support in the implementation and supervision of the rehabilitation works of the North-South railway corridor”, the EU said. The railway goes through the Moldovan cities of Vălcineț, Ocnița, Bălți, Ungheni, Chișinău and Căinari.
Other than this 32-million-euro grant, the upgrade of this corridor in Moldova saw investments by various European institutions. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, for example, is investing a total of 41 million euros in the project. Moreover, the European Investment Bank shelled out over 50 million euros. The upgrade of this railway axis in Moldova is a key factor in the country’s integration into a European network.
