Europe on course for 330 new hotels in 2024

Nearly 44,000 rooms in 330 new hotels are set to be added across Europe during 2024, according to the latest analysis from industry data specialist Lodging Econometrics (LE).

The company said that 128 new hotels with around 17,000 rooms opened in Europe during the first half of 2024, with a further 202 properties and 27,000 rooms set to debut between July and the end of December.

These numbers are similar to LE’s previous estimate in May, with the overall number of new rooms in Europe this year now slightly lower than the previous estimate of 45,000 rooms.

LE said that the continent’s total pipeline now stood at 1,680 hotel projects, which would add a total of 250,000 rooms if they all go ahead. This includes a record high for renovation and conversion projects in Europe with a total of 825 properties accounting for 95,500 rooms.

The UK continues its dominance in Europe for hotel development with 306 projects and 43,500 rooms – well ahead of Germany (178 projects), France (120), Turkey (117) and Portugal (114).

Unsurprisingly, London is the top city for new hotels with 76 projects and nearly 15,000 rooms in the pipeline, followed by Istanbul (50 hotels), Lisbon (36), Dublin (26) and Dusseldorf (24).

Currently LE is predicting even higher numbers of hotel openings in Europe in the next two years: 368 properties and 52,800 rooms in 2025, followed by 427 hotels and 59,600 rooms in 2026.
