Europe weather maps turn volcanic red as Greece hit by 46C heat bomb
Greece will be hit by a severe heat bomb as temperature levels soar as high as 46C with an expert predicting all “records will be broken” this year.
Europe has been engulfed with a blistering heatwave this year with several popular holiday destinations such as Spain, Italy, and Greece witnessing abnormally high temperatures.
Latest weather maps from WXCharts have turned dark red indicating the possibility of extreme heat conditions in parts of Greece.
Maps show that the mercury levels will swell to 46C in areas around Larissa in Greece while other areas will also see temperatures hovering between 40-41C.
However, a weather expert told Express.co.uk that “furnace temperatures” will not be limited to Greece.
Jim Dale, a meterologist with British Weather Services told Express.co.uk: “I think it will happen well before the end of July and will continue into August.
“‘Furnace temperatures’, not just for Greece but also Cyprus, Turkey, southern & central Spain and North Africa generally.
“Records will be broken. Heat-related deaths are inevitable, along with wildfires.”
The grim warning comes as Greek authorities scrambled to deal with the heat-related incidents. Several alerts and advice have been issued to the holidaymakers who are jetting off to the popular destination during the summer season.
Theodoros Kolydas, who heads up the National Meteorological Center, raised the alarm on X, formerly Twitter, about the continued heat until July 27.
Athens’ renowned ancient site, the Acropolis, was closed yesterday from midday to 5pm due to the formidable heat which sat at a steady 38C even in shaded areas.
The decision came from the Culture Ministry in order to ensure the welfare of visitors and on-site staff.
William Spencer, climate and first aid product manager at the British Red Cross, said: “Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and getting worse because of climate change.
“Sadly, we have seen cases already this year of the tragic impact high temperatures can have on human life. High temperatures make it harder for the body to cool itself and we all need to take care to manage the health risks of heat.
“If you are travelling to a country experiencing extreme heat, there are several steps you can take to keep yourself and others safe.”
