European superstar ruled out of Melbourne Cup by vets

European superstar Jan Brueghel has been officially withdrawn from the Melbourne Cup, dashing hopes for what had been a highly anticipated run. One of the early favourites for the prestigious race, the undefeated Aidan O’Brien-trained galloper was ruled out by Racing Victoria’s veterinary team.

The news broke shortly after the horse completed light trackwork at Werribee on Tuesday morning, just hours before the final decision. Reports indicate that all international contenders underwent routine pre-race scans on Saturday as part of the Cup’s strict protocols.

A statement from Racing Victoria confirmed the findings:
“An expert panel of internationally recognised equine surgeons and diagnostic imaging specialists reviewed Jan Brueghel’s CT scan results. Their evaluation indicated the horse is at increased risk of injury,” the statement read. “Based on this expert advice, RV Stewards determined that Jan Brueghel was unsuitable to race and ordered his withdrawal.”

Ryan Moore had been booked to pilot the star stayer in the Cup, but those plans are now off the table. Speaking to SEN Track, Coolmore’s Tom Magnier expressed his disappointment.

“We found out this morning that Jan Brueghel will not take part in the Melbourne Cup,” Magnier confirmed. “He went through all the required protocols back in Ireland, and the team has been thrilled with how he’s been progressing here in quarantine at Werribee.”

Magnier added, “Unfortunately, the vets decided he didn’t meet the standards required to race. It’s incredibly disappointing, especially for the staff who’ve worked tirelessly both at home and throughout the journey to Australia. I really feel for them—everyone was excited for this opportunity.”

Despite the setback, Magnier emphasised that horse welfare remains their top priority. “At Coolmore, the horse always comes first. It’s a tough decision, but it’s the right one for Jan Brueghel.”

Prior to the news breaking Jan Brueghel was a $5.00 chance with online betting sites in Melbourne Cup odds.
