Fielding has emerged as one of the most important criteria for selection in a cricket team. As a result, catches that were rare about a decade ago have become normal. Who could forget the astonishing boundary-line catch of David Miller by Suryakumar Yadav that helped India win the T20 World Cup 2024?
Players need to have good reflexes and presence of mind to pull off a remarkable catch. One expects an international cricketer to to take every catch that comes in his range given the hard grind they go through in their daily routine, however, when such catches come up in low-profile tournaments, one can only stand and applaud as the players don’t often get the facilities to train.
A similar catch was witnessed in a European Cricket Championship match when a fielder used his foot to catch the ball. The batter hit the shot towards long on and the ball seemed to be dipping on the fielder. It was not possible for the fielder to bend down and take the catch so he causally put his foot to the ball which bounced off his shoe into the his hands.
Meanwhile, switching to international cricket, India suffered a 32-run defeat to Sri Lanka in the second ODI. For two games in a row, the Indian middle order collapsed to Sri Lanka spinners. Rohit Sharma batted brilliantly and scored fifties in both matches, however, there was no support from the other end as India lost the plot from the position of strength. The first ODI between the two teams ended as a tie but the Men in Blue suffered a 32-run defeat in the second ODI. The third ODI between the two teams will be played on August 7 in Colombo.
