Giorgia Meloni named ‘the most powerful person in Europe’ – Times of India

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has secured the leading position in Politico‘s latest ranking of Europe’s most influential personalities, topping a list of 28 individuals.
Meloni’s ascent has seen her transform from an ultranationalist political figure into Italy’s premier, leading the right-wing Brothers of Italy party, all within a decade, reported Politico.
Her political evolution includes distancing herself from her earlier associations with the neo-fascist Italian social movement and past endorsements of Benito Mussolini. As prime minister, she has adopted a more centrist approach, earning recognition from European leaders who initially regarded her with scepticism.
Since assuming office in 2022, her administration has implemented stringent policies on migration and LGBTQ+ matters. Her robust migration strategy, including controversial agreements with Tunisia and Egypt, has received support from EU leadership, despite worries about the impact on vulnerable populations.
According to Politico, although classified as a right-wing leader in Europe, Meloni has established herself as a crucial EU stakeholder, balancing nationalist principles with practical governance, particularly regarding Ukraine and migration policies.
She has brought notable stability to Italy’s traditionally volatile political landscape. Her commanding leadership style has earned her recognition as Italy’s “alpha” figure, often outmanoeuvring opponents through her intellectual capacity and authoritative demeanour.
Her rise has sparked apprehension regarding democratic standards, particularly concerning press freedom and the protection of minority groups.
Politico’s comprehensive ranking is structured in three categories: “doers,” “disrupters,” and “dreamers.” Politicians occupy twenty positions, with nationalists and conservatives each holding seven spots. Pope Francis features as the sole non-European representative.
