Heathrow achieves new record for passenger traffic
London Heathrow has achieved a new traffic record by catering for 81.5 million passengers over the past 12 months.
The UK airport also set a new high for May traffic which reached 7.2 million travellers – the first time that passenger numbers have ever exceeded 7 million for the month.
Heathrow expects this momentum to continue during the summer season with traffic forecast to add up to 30 million passengers over the next three months.
Thomas Woldbye, the airport’s CEO, said: “We are now giving record numbers of people the chance to connect smoothly with the world. Supporting 81 million journeys doesn’t just help families to make wonderful holiday memories, importantly it is about the vital trade and business links a hub like Heathrow creates for the UK’s economy.”
Figures show that Heathrow’s traffic for the first five months of 2024 rose to 32.4 million passengers – up by 7.9 per cent compared with the same period last year.
Asia Pacific is the region to see the highest growth in passengers at Heathrow so far this year with an 18.4 per cent year-on-year increase.
