In an exclusive interview with Travel And Tour World, Björn Bender, CEO of Rail Europe, highlights how European railways are revolutionizing sustainable travel across the continent. He emphasizes the extensive rail network’s role in connecting major cities and hidden gems, offering a seamless and eco-friendly alternative to air travel. Bender discusses various initiatives, including high-speed trains, modernized stations, and enhanced onboard amenities, all contributing to a superior travel experience. He also notes the increasing use of renewable energy and sustainable practices, making rail travel a key driver in promoting eco-conscious tourism in Europe.

Travel And Tour World: How have European railways contributed to the growth of the travel and tourism industry in Europe in recent years?

Björn Bender: European railways have been pivotal in boosting the tourism industry by offering a convenient, efficient, and scenic way to explore the continent. The extensive rail network connects major cities and smaller towns, making it easy for tourists to travel across multiple countries seamlessly. By providing reliable and frequent services, railways have become an attractive alternative to air travel, especially for short and medium distances. This has significantly increased the number of tourists choosing rail travel for its comfort, affordability, and ability to offer a more immersive experience of Europe’s diverse landscapes and cultures.

Travel And Tour World:  What specific initiatives and improvements in railway infrastructure have European countries implemented to enhance the tourism experience for international travellers?

Björn Bender: Some of the initiatives include modernizing train stations, upgrading tracks, and introducing new, high-speed trains that reduce travel time between popular destinations. Many countries have also focused on enhancing the passenger experience by offering better onboard amenities, such as Wi-Fi, dining services, and comfortable seating. Additionally, integrated ticketing systems and user-friendly booking platforms have made it easier for international travellers to plan and book their journeys, collectively making rail travel more appealing and accessible to tourists from around the world.

Travel And Tour World:  In what ways have high-speed rail networks influenced the railway accessibility and appeal of lesser-known tourist destinations in Europe?

Björn Bender: High-speed rail networks have revolutionized the accessibility and appeal of lesser-known tourist destinations in Europe by significantly reducing travel times. Destinations that were previously considered remote or difficult to reach are now just a few hours away from major cities. This has opened up new opportunities for tourists to explore hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path locations that offer unique cultural, historical, and natural attractions. As a result, tourism has become more evenly distributed across the continent, benefiting local economies and reducing the pressure on overcrowded tourist hotspots.

Travel And Tour World:  How are European railways integrating sustainable and eco-friendly practices to attract environmentally-conscious tourists and promote sustainable tourism?

Björn Bender: Rail travel itself is inherently more sustainable than other modes of transport, generating significantly lower CO2 emissions per passenger kilometre compared to cars and airplanes.

European railways are making great strides in adopting sustainable practices and attracting environmentally-conscious tourists. For instance, initiatives like increasing the use of renewable energy, replacing single-use plastics with compostable and plant-based materials, and offering vegetarian and vegan menu options are being implemented across various rail networks. Additionally, substituting plastic cutlery and straws with greener alternatives and collaborating with Fairtrade partners etc. These efforts highlight the environmental benefits of train travel and encourage more people to choose sustainable transport options.

Travel And Tour World: What role do rail passes and travel packages play in boosting tourism across multiple European countries, and how do they benefit travellers?

Björn Bender: Rail passes simplify the travel process, allowing tourists to move freely between countries without the hassle of purchasing separate tickets for each leg of their journey. This ease of travel encourages tourists to explore more destinations, which in turn boosts tourism across multiple regions.

For travellers, the benefits are numerous. Firstly, rail passes provide unparalleled flexibility. With a Eurail or Interrail pass, for example, travellers can enjoy unlimited travel across 33 countries. This means they can plan spontaneous trips, hop on and off trains, and visit a wide variety of destinations at their own pace. Additionally, these passes are cost-effective. Buying individual tickets for each journey can quickly add up, but a rail pass offers significant savings, making European travel more accessible to a broader range of people, from students and young backpackers to families and retirees.

Rail Europe enhances this convenience by allowing Seat Reservations to be made online for select high-speed and scenic routes, ensuring a seamless travel experience.

Finally, Rail Europe is excited to offer a 20% discount on Eurail and Interrail Passes from 4th July to 18th July, valid for travel starting from 1st September onwards. We encourage travellers to immerse themselves in the rich diversity of Europe.
