Prince George’s dilemma over whether to watch Wimbledon or Euro football final

Prince George could be facing a serious sporting dilemma this weekend, as both the Wimbledon final and the Euro 2024 final in Germany fall today, July 14.

It has been confirmed by Kensington Palace that Prince William will be heading to Berlin to see the England team face Spain in the final of the football tournament.

Meanwhile Princess Kate will be making her much-anticipated return to Wimbledon this afternoon for the Men’s Singles Final, having spent months off royal duties due to her cancer treatment.

It is not yet known if George will attend either event but he will be sorry to miss out on one, as a source told Express.co.uk: “George is a huge tennis fan and also loves football so it’s a difficult position for him to be in when deciding what to support.

“The football starts much later than the tennis, so he could watch both. But the real dilemma is whether he will join his mother to watch the tennis or his father in Germany.”

George’s love of tennis has been helped by one of his mum’s famous friends, the former Wimbledon champion Roger Federer, who has given him private lessons.

Federer spoke highly of George’s skills, saying he was a “sweet boy” and had a “good swing” as he told reporters in SW19 in 2019: “I love to see that they are [the Wales children] into tennis or into sports.”

He added: “His mum has always enjoyed tennis. I hope he’ll stay the same in a few years’ time and this is not just an in-the-moment situation.”

When asked if it was true that he was George’s favourite tennis player, Federer responded: “I think I have a little advantage that I actually spent some time with him, so maybe I’m the only player he’s ever met. Then you have a little head start into who is your favourite player.”

Prince William too has been sharing his love of sport with his eldest son, especially football, as the Prince of Wales is a committed England and Aston Villa fan.

As President of the Football Association William has been to Germany as much as possible to see Gareth Southgate’s side progress through the Euros, with George possibly joining him this evening.

William and George attended a major football match together back in May, when they thrilled royal fans with their appearance at the FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium.

The Prince was not able to be in Dortmund for the semi-finals when England beat the Netherlands 2-1, however he had a good reason as he had an important Homewards engagement in London the next day.

However, he said of goal-scoring Ollie Watkins afterwards, having watched the match from home: “I had a little moment when I thought ‘…he might do this’!? I was willing him on when he came on. It was a hell of a goal.”
