Amidst the looming threat of the Russia-Ukraine war engulfing neighboring countries, the NATO’s eastern members like Poland and the Baltic states are rushing to fortify their defenses and enhance their security apparatus.

Russia-Ukraine war: In wake of the recent escalation in the Russia-Ukraine war, the conflict which has been raging for nearly two years, now threatens to spread across entire Europe, triggering fear of a global war that could potentially lead to World War 3. The United States and other NATO member nations are seemingly preparing for a war Russia with NATO’s European members bolstering their defense in preparation for a full-blown war with Russia and its allies in the near future.

With the Russian Army reportedly threatening to attack countries that are close to Russia’s borders, there has been a wave of defense-related measures European nations since late November, with Germany’s foreign intelligence service chief, Bruno Kahl, asserting that Moscow was preparing for a war with the West.

Kahl, however, believes that Russia won’t launch a major attack on any NATO member as long as the US-led alliance presents a united front against Moscow.

According to experts, Russia has employed several methods to test the unity within NATO, that includes occupying territory. In September, European Union (EU) Defense Commissioner, Andrius Kubilius had said that NATO and EU agree on the fact that Russian President Vladimir Putin was preparing for an all-out war with the European nations under the EU umbrella and the NATO alliance members, and could be ready for such a major conflict within the next 6-8 years.

NATO members bolstering security, defenses

Amidst the looming threat of the Russia-Ukraine war engulfing neighboring countries, the NATO’s eastern members like Poland and the Baltic states are rushing to fortify their defenses and enhance their security apparatus. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have signed agreements to increase border security against a potential incursion from Russia and its ally Belarus, while Germany has started renovating its World War II-era bunkers, and also developed an app to help its citizens locate nearby bunker in wake of an attack.

Similarly, Poland, which shares a border with Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave, is investing heavily in its ‘East Shield’ project.

In addition to military efforts, European nations are also educating their citizens on war-time crisis preparedness and responsibility. Sweden and Finland, NATO’s newest members are distributing leaflets amongst their citizens, while Lithuania is preparing elaborate evacuation plans.

In view of the threat of widespread war, Baltic nations and Hungary are prioritizing to beef up their air defense systems, announcing new facilities.

Meanwhile, in a recent development which could change the course of the bloody conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated he is willing to cede occupied Ukrainian territory to Russia to “achieve peace”.
