Doha: Refusing to “speculate” about what US President-elect Donald Trump’s policies will be about Ukraine when he takes over next month, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov warned that recent nuclear talk was “dangerous.”

Lavrov, one of the world’s longest-serving foreign ministers, accused President Joe Biden had persuaded Europe not to believe in Russian redlines and pressured the British and French to allow the Ukrainians to use the longer-range missiles against the Russians. He added that the US was worried that Europe would suffer if there was “escalation.” He added: “He can’t imagine USA will suffer… There are wise people in the United States… I hope they won’t allow playing with fire.”

Speaking at the Doha Forum dialogue, Lavrov said the attack against the Assad government was led by a UN designated terrorist group and was in violation of UN decisions. He said he had spoken with the Turk and Iranian leaders and called for the immediate end to the war and dialogue between the government and the legitimate opposition. Lavrov said Russia was trying to avoid bloodshed in Syria and said his country would help the Syrians militarily, while blaming the United States for certain moves in West Asia and Afghanistan.

Speaking about the West Asian situation, he said the Biden plan didn’t exist and Russia had condemned the terror attack of October 7 and what came after— “the collective punishment of Palestinians.” He said extremism will continue till a Palestinian state came into being.
