Scotland v Hungary LIVE: Line-ups and team news from crucial Euro 2024 clash

Andy Robertson satisfied with improved Scotland performance

Scotland could be on the brink of history at Euro 2024 as they wait to face Hungary in the final round of group games in Group A.

Steve Clarke’s side know a win would take them to four points, and with the four best-performing third-placed teams qualifying for the last 16, victory against Hungary may well be enough to secure a place in the round of 16.

Hungary, who sit bottom of Group A on zero points, know themselves that a win would give them a slim chance of making the next round, despite bruising defeats to Switzerland and hosts Germany.

So, with both teams knowing that nothing but a win will do, expect fireworks in Stuttgart as both sides look to stake their claim to a place in the last 16 at Euro 2024.

Follow the score and all the latest updates from Scotland v Hungary below – plus the key events and reaction to Germany v Switzerland in the other game in Group A:

An enormous night for this Scotland side. It’s much-changed at the back since that opening night of the Euros against Germany, partly due to suspension and also to injury, but in the attack it’s more of the same from Steve Clarke. Is that the right formula to roll with in a match they must win?

Lots of emphasis on McGinn and McTominay to get into attacking positions tonight.

Scotland need the real John McGinn to turn up if they are to make Euro 2024 history

This time, it’s history. Euro 2024 began with Graeme Souness, lambasting the lack of quality in a Scotland side found to be out of its depth. Scotland may end Euro 2024 having achieved what Souness and the golden generation led by himself and Kenny Dalglish could not, by reaching the knockout stages of an international tournament for the first time. Before a ball was kicked, Scotland and manager Steve Clarke would have gladly accepted the position they find themselves in now: beat Hungary in Stuttgart on Sunday night and they will reach the magic four-point mark that should be enough to go through to the last-16.

If the group stages of the 24-team Euros come to showcase a class divide between the haves and the have-nots — as pre-tournament favourites France and England go through the motions while a range of nations less accustomed to the big stage, from Slovakia and Romania to Turkey and Albania, provide the colour by seizing their opportunity — Scotland’s players have a chance to write themselves into legend with a single win. That has been the goal since arriving in Germany almost two weeks ago.

Steve Clarke hopes lessons learned as Scotland aim for Euros knockout stages for first time

They have just one point from their first two matches – but victory on Sunday, 23 June, would almost certainly see Scotland make history.

“We’ve been in this position before at the last tournament so hopefully we can show that we’ve learned a few lessons,” Clarke told reporters ahead of the clash.

What is the Scotland team news?

Kieran Tierney is out of Euro 2024 after he was stretchered off against Switzerland with a hamstring injury, with the left-back already returning to club Arsenal for further assessment. Tierney is likely to be replaced on the left side of Scotland’s back three by Scott McKenna, unless Steve Clarke decides to change the shape and switch to four at the back.

Ryan Porteous remains suspended but Clarke found a better balance in the team against Switzerland with Billy Gilmour brought into midfield, allowing Scott McTominay and John McGinn to push further forward. Scotland need to win, so Clarke may be tempted to name a more attacking side, but the forced alteration of McKenna for Tierney could be the only change.

Scotland XI: Gunn; Hendry, Hanley, McKenna; Ralston, Gilmour, McGregor, Robertson; McTominay, McGinn; Adams

Hungary XI: Gulacsi; Fiola, Orban, Dardai; Bolla, A. Nagy, Schafer, Kerkez; Szoboszlai, Sallai; Varga

What Scotland have to get right against Hungary

John McGinn would be the first to admit he has yet to turn up. Scott McTominay, Scotland’s hero in qualifying, had his moment with the opener against Switzerland but Clarke has been unable to get enough from McGinn and his strike partner Che Adams – who faces less expectation but has been just as anonymous.

If McGinn’s lack of involvement is due to Scotland tilting towards their left, the task facing Clarke and his players was made tougher by the confirmation that Kieran Tierney would play no part in the Group A decider against Hungary. It deprives Scotland of some of the balance on their stronger flank, with Scott McKenna set to act as the final piece of the triangle that also includes Robertson and Callum McGregor.

On the other side, Billy Gilmour’s return to the Scotland side helped solve a number of issues from the Germany defeat but the midfielder’s class on the ball also served to highlight the deficiencies on Scotland’s right. Hungary, assuming they have studied the Germany and Switzerland matches, will be the latest to target Anthony Ralston and Jack Hendry.

Scotland have to be perfect if they are to advance, as evidenced by Xherdan Shaqiri’s stunning equaliser in Cologne. Clarke rued that no other player on the pitch could have managed to put away the chance that Shaqiri took so ruthlessly from outside of the box, following Ralston’s costly back pass.

But Steve Clarke’s side currently have the worst third-placed record, which means they really have to win today to be sure of their place in the last-16.
