Winter weather has caused chaos for travellers across Europe, with airports in Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK facing significant delays and cancellations. Here’s what’s happening and how to prepare.
Severe winter weather disrupts flights in Germany and the Netherlands
Some of Europe’s busiest airports are dealing with the brunt of the winter storm:
- Frankfurt Airport: Over 120 flights were cancelled on Sunday as snow and ice made conditions unsafe for take-off and landing.
- Munich Airport: On Saturday evening, 35 flights were cancelled ahead of worsening weather, disrupting a total of 750 departures and arrivals.
- Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam: Around 70 flights were grounded as icy conditions created further delays.
Despite efforts to keep runways clear and planes de-iced, freezing rain and snow continue to disrupt operations.
Winter weather disrupts flights at major European Airports
The bad weather hasn’t spared other major hubs:
- France: Airports across the country reported 120 flight cancellations due to icy runways and poor visibility.
- Brussels Airport: While affected by freezing temperatures, only minor delays have been reported, thanks to efficient de-icing operations.
- UK Airports: Airports across the UK are seeing delays and cancellations, although exact figures are not yet available.
Essential travel tips for navigating winter flight disruptions
If you’re travelling during these difficult conditions, here’s what you can do to manage disruptions:
- Stay informed: Check your airline’s website or app regularly for updates on your flight.
- Know your rights: EU regulations protect passengers, offering refunds, rebooking, or compensation for significant delays or cancellations.
- Be prepared: Arrive early, dress warmly, and bring essentials like snacks and water in case of extended waits.
- Explore alternatives: For shorter distances, trains or buses may be a more reliable option.
With snow and ice expected to linger for several days, delays and cancellations are likely to continue. Travellers are encouraged to stay flexible and patient as airlines and airports prioritise safety during this challenging weather.
