Spain impress against Italy, Southgate misses Phillips as England draw
Great Danes
England weren’t great this evening, but that’s not how Denmark fans outside the stadium see it.
Speaking to talkSPORT.com while chanting ‘Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that’, the Danish faithful had a simple message.
Stop bashing England and give them some credit for an exceptional performance.
One Denmark fan said: “The takeaway from this game isn’t that England were bad or Southgate’s starting 11 was s***. It was 100% Denmark’s fault that the England team played so s***.
“And the Danish coach Kasper Hjulmand showed that he’s supposed to be the Danish coach. And to be honest, 1-1 doesn’t feel as exciting as it should. We should have won this game. But we can make our own luck and own destiny in the last game.
“I think when you look back on the game, 1-1, England-Denmark. People will say that England had a bad game. People will say that England didn’t play up to their best. People will say that England should have won this game. But no, this is a credit to Denmark. Denmark played England off the park. No doubt about that.”
A second Denmark fan said: “England could play better maybe, I don’t know. But Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Morten Hjulmand neutralised that midfield and got the job done. Denmark are going to win the Euros.”
A third Dane added: “Honestly, the Danish guys did a good job today. And we decided to win. And you know that as well. I can see the reporter’s looking at me.
“We were unlucky. But I think if you get a draw against Slovenia then you’re going to go through. So you guys go through in first place. We’ll go second.”
