The 10 friendliest countries for tourists in Europe – even France makes the list

Europe is home to an incredibly diverse range of cultures, climates and cuisines, making choosing your next holiday destination tricky.

This year, however, there have been increasing concerns that tourists are no longer made to feel welcome by locals – a feeling that is likely to play a big part in the decision-making process.

Luckily, Conde Nast Traveller has asked its readers to choose the European destinations they feel most welcome for their 2024 holidays.

Some nations are familiar faces from last year’s rankings, but the crown went to a surprising newcomer to the list.

Each country impressed our readers for different reasons, from the safe communities to the merry spirits, but all share a profound, friendly atmosphere that makes the place memorable.

France has a reputation for being unwelcoming, but some say this is a myth, and the country has moved past this cliché.

Predicted to become the world’s most visited country by 2025, France has an unmatched aura that entices visitors from all corners of the Earth while keeping it at the forefront of culture.

It is the top destination for world-famous art, delicious gastronomy and wine, glittering cities, and romantic coastlines. The climates vary from Mediterranean temperatures in the summer to temperate oceanic climates with cool winters further north.

Having had all eyes on the capital of Paris for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, it’s no surprise that France has made the list.

Finding Spain on this list may surprise many, considering the southern European country made headlines this year for anti-tourism protests

It appears, however, that this has not tarnished their reputation.

The cheerful, easy-going culture of beach sports and siestas appeals to travellers across the globe, with Spain even predicted to overtake France as the world’s most visited country by 2040.

One can explore a colourful patchwork of vibrant cities and beautiful coastal towns while fuelling up on authentic tapas and paella in Europe’s underrated food destination.

The nation is bursting with popular holiday destinations, each with its distinct personality and all offering generous hospitality to its guests.

Istanbul sits proudly as a shopper’s paradise. At the same time, Cappadocia is a place straight out of a fairytale, with bizarre rock formations nicknamed “fairy chimneys” and dawn skies filled with hot air balloons.
