The city in Europe that’s on the border of three separate countries

Nestled into a crook of the Rhine River you will find a spot where three major European countries converge allowing any intrepid traveller the opportunity to slide easily between history, cultures and languages.

Found in Switzerland, Basel is a city that sits directly at the point where France and Germany meet, known as the tri-point.

This tri-point is where the three major European countries meet in the middle of the Rhine river, found in north west Switzerland.

Being at the crossroads of Switzerland, France and Germany, Basel offers a synergy of three cultures, offering the best from all three.

The region has been described as a medieval jewel where three borders meet and are easily crossed.

The airport in Basel, known as EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg, is also shared, including separate exits leading directly into either Switzerland or France.

There are no border checks for each country here too making Basel a melting pot for a seamless mix of a gastronomic experience, culture and so much more.

Basel is in Northwestern Switzerland and is considered to be the capital of that region.

The region has been deemed an important place as a rail hub with its three railway stations – home to the French, German and Swiss railway networks which all lie within the city.

The wider Basel region has suburbs in both France and Germany with a population in the region of roughly 201,971residents, of whom 36.9% are resident foreign nationals.

Due to its location being the meeting point of Germany, France and Switzerland, the Swiss military reportedly deem the city as being indefensible during wartime as it sits on the Swiss national border and is beyond the Jura Mountains.

The region is home to the country’s highest concentration of museums and is also home to the awe-inspiring Munster Cathedral. 

“There is lots of history, scenic views, and things to see and do,” wrote one TripAdvisor review, adding how Basel has a “relaxed, happy vibe” which is easily accessible with public transportation.

“There are museums, restaurants, plazas, fountains and shopping. I especially like the old bridge over the Rhine.”
