The epic 440-mile road trip linking two of Europe’s best cities

An incredible 44-mile road trip with breathtaking views and scenic coastline links two of Europe’s best cities

A road trip from Pula to Dubrovnik is a fantastic way to explore the stunning coastline and rich history of Croatia

One can start their journey at Pula and snake their way down the coast to Dubrovnik.

The road journey breaks up the 440 miles with stops in Rijeka, Zadar, and Split.

Follow the coastal road (D8) for the most scenic views, but be prepared for winding roads and slower travel times.

The starting point of the journey Pula offers a unique blend of ancient Roman architecture and modern attractions. Tourist spots such as the Temple of Augustus, the Arch of the Sergii, and the Twin Gates are a must-visit.

The city also boasts beautiful beaches such as Verudela, Stoja, and Valkane, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. The crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea are ideal for snorkelling and diving.

Make sure to stop in Rijeka, another port city on Croatia’s Adriatic coast. Known as the gateway to many of the country’s islands, it offers the perfect opportunity for a boat trip if you stay overnight.

From Rijeka, it’s about a three-hour drive to Zadar, another popular destination on Croatia‘s stunning coast.

Zadar boasts a charming old town with Venetian and Roman influences and is one of the more affordable places to stay in the country.

Just an hour and a half away from Zadar, Croatia‘s breathtaking Plitvice Lakes National Park is well worth a detour.

From Zadar, cover the beautiful 99 miles to reach Split which is known for its waterfalls and scenic beauty. One can also pay a visit to the Diocletian’s Palace, the Riva promenade, and Marjan Hill for panoramic views.

From Split, it’s a short journey to the final stop in Dubrovnik. Renowned for its well-preserved medieval architecture, scenic beauty, and vibrant cultural scene, Dubrovnik is a must-visit destination.

Holidaymakers who have covered the epic journey have shared their experiences on TripAdvisor forum.

One person commented: “The drive from Pula to Dubrovnik takes about 8 to 9 hours. It is not hilly, but is very curvy between Ploce and Dubrovnik and can be slow if stuck behind trucks or slow-moving buses. It is a nice ride, though.”

A second user said: “It’s a long drive to try to complete in one day. You should stop somewhere along the way down and rest. Portions of the road can be a bit challenging as the coast road is often slow-moving.

“It’s a lovely drive, so enjoy yourself and stop at some of the many small villages along the road.”
