The hidden gem island named ‘best’ beach destination in Europe
With the lowering temperatures and early dark nights, for some of us, summer couldn’t come quicker enough. Although we may have to wait a little while longer for those days to come, it doesn’t mean we have to wait to plan our next holiday destination, and this place is one you need to consider.
The Portuguese archipelago Madeira is renowned for its beautiful landscapes, including World Heritage Site, laurel forest and its own Madeira wine.
The region includes the islands of Madeira, Porto Santo and the Desertas and welcomed over 2 million visitors last year.
While most tourists find themselves drawn to the largest island, which it is named after, just 26 miles northeast of it, is the smaller yet beautiful Porto Santo Island.
In fact, the island is so beautiful that it was named Europe’s leading beach destination at the 2024 World Travel Awards.
The island described as a “golden paradise”, boasts multiple sandy beaches. Porto Santo Beach is known for its “proven therapeutic properties”. The quality of the sea waters on the 9km beach is said to help complement the lack of mineral salts that are caused by stress and fatigue.
The beach is one visited by many who want to both relax and benefit from its wellness properties.
Port Santo is also home to the incredible Cabeco da Ponta Beach. The beach is located in an area with hotel facilities, which makes it extremely popular amongst tourists.
It also has plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars dotted around the area, so it’s a great spot to take in the island’s beauty while enjoying some of its local cuisine.
Other than all the gorgeous beaches, the island has a number of activities to take part in. Porto Santo’s unique landscape makes it the perfect destination to try out multiple sports and water activities, meaning you’re never short of anything to do there.
For animal lovers, a relaxing boat trip will bring travellers close to all the amazing marine wildlife found around the island and even a chance to swim alongside dolphins – an experience not to miss out on.
Not sure what to do? The island offers eight tours, including two snorkelling, pirates and corsairs, two kayaking and three hiking, all of which are directed by local guides, which means there’s truly something for everyone to enjoy.
