The list of hidden gems comes from European Best Destinations, based on votes by more than one million travellers from 172 countries.

From secluded villages tucked away in mountains to untouched beaches, these gems offer a glimpse into a world rarely seen by travellers.

1. Villajoyosa, Spain

This historical picturesque town located 32km from Alicante is full of colourful homes and a gorgeous beach.

This hidden gem has lots to see and do, but if you’re looking for a relaxing holiday, the long stretch of beach is perfect for sunbathing.

2. Ares del Maestre, Spain

This medieval Spanish town sits on top of a rocky hill, with gorgeous views over the region of El Maestrazgo.

The small urban centre features an 18th-century church as well as many other important buildings and landmarks.

Holidaymakers can enjoy food at a number of restaurants, although there are not many hotels in the area.

3. Primosten, Croatia

Just an hour north of Split lies Primosten in Croatia, a seaside village perfect if you’re aim is relaxing, as there aren’t many sights.

One of its main sights is the 15th-century white stone Church of St George and travellers can enjoy a variety of restaurants, including the rated Santa Marina.

5. Naantali, Finland

Naantali is situated in southern Finland and is an important centre of tourism in the country, being one of the oldest and quaintest towns.

The old town offers travellers galleries, boutiques, cafes and restaurants and its close towns make it a popular day trip for many.

6. Bour, Faroe Islands

Bour is a small village which welcomes tourists from all over the world, with plenty of Airbnb options.

Travellers can simply relax and enjoy the picturesque village or enjoy boat trips with breathtaking views of the islands.

7. Blavand, Denmark

Boasting 60km of superb beaches, this hidden gem is a true paradise for water lovers, but equally as fun for those who like to remain on dry land.

There is plenty to enjoy in the region including museums and beaches.

Founded in medieval times, travellers can enjoy the world’s tallest church tower, modern architecture as well as good food and drink.

Ulm is a region waiting to be explored whether you love hiking, cycling or exploring.

9. Aljezur, Portugal

Aljezur is a small market town of whitewashed homes and cobbled streets located 30km north of Lagos, with its nearest airport being Faro.

A vibrant location steeped in history offers panoramic views across the region with plenty of restaurants to explore.

10. Dartlo, Georgia

This village is known for its historic stone towers and houses, and the Dartlo church, sitting 1,850 metres above sea level.

It boasts a picture-perfect mountain backdrop of the Greater Caucasus and provides easy access to various hiking trails.
