The world’s largest church that’s an incredible 518ft tall – it’s not in Europe
Europe may be home to many grand cathedrals, but the world’s largest church isn’t located there — it’s actually in the heart of West Africa.
The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast stands at an awe-inspiring 518 feet tall. That’s comfortably larger than St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican which is nevertheless an impressive 449 feet.
The basilica, in 1990, was the brainchild of Ivory Coast’s first president, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, who sought to build a place of peace and unity.
The gargantuan church was built in honour of the Virgin Mary but serves as a symbol of faith for people of all denominations; Ivory Coast is a religiously diverse state, with a small majority of Muslims.
Lebanese architect Pierre Fakhoury came up with the design, blending both traditional African and European architectural influences.
With a dome that reaches 518 feet, the basilica is not only the largest church in the world but also one of the tallest domes globally.
Its vast interior can hold up to 18,000 people, making it a focal point for worship and pilgrimage.
The church’s exterior, made of gleaming white marble, contrasts beautifully with its lush green surroundings. Inside, visitors are greeted with a stunning array of mosaics, stained glass windows, and sculptures that add to the serene atmosphere.
Though not as well-known globally as churches in Europe, the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace has become an important site for visitors worldwide.
Its message of peace, reconciliation, and unity resonates deeply, especially in a country that has faced political unrest.
When visiting Ivory Coast, a trip to Yamoussoukro is a must.
In addition to the basilica, the city offers historical sites like the Presidential Palace and vibrant markets that showcase the country’s rich culture.
