Underrated country with few tourists home to Europe’s ‘most beautiful’ lake

An underrated European hidden gem home to an incredible lake is one of the best places to visit this summer.

Lake Bohinj is Slovenia’s largest glacial lake which is hidden in the north west of the country. It is located inside Triglav National Park and is surrounded by the mountains of the Julian Alps.

The lake is  less than an hour away from the capital, Ljubljana so you can see both nature and the city on your trip.

If you’re staying in the city, you can book a tour to see the lakes on a day trip.  Around the lake there are plenty of activities you can take up if you are the adventurous type. From walking to cycling and fishing or water sports – there is no shortage of things to do once you’ve taken in the views.

One traveller who visited the lake said on TripAdvisor: “The lake is beautiful with easy walking all the way around.

“It’s a great place for swimming and a pleasant peaceful environment enjoyed by both young and old. If you are walking just one side, walk the north side. There are also free buses, and a lovely boat ride that you can build into your walk.”

Many have rated Lake Bohinj higher than Slovenia’s more famous Lake Bled. If you do want to see both, they are located just 30 minutes apart by car.

With many tourists flocking to the likes of Lake Garda or Lake Como in Italy, you can get the same beautiful views here for a cheaper price – and avoid the huge crowds during the summer months.

If you’re looking to stay in the area, Hotel Bohinj offers incredible views of the scenery.

One visitor said: “We had such a lovely stay here at Hotel Bohinj! The room was so comfortable, we had a perfect nights sleep and even got to pick our own pillow off the ‘pillow menu’.

“The whole hotel is beautiful. We especially loved spending a couple of hours using the wellness facilities. It was also lovely to see that all the food at breakfast time was locally sourced. Would stay again!”
