Hotels in Europe, Africa, Americas, & Asia-Pacific adopt the WTTC’s Basics, gaining global support & expanding in Japan, Philippines, & India.

The Global Tourism Council (GTC) has reached a significant achievement with the adoption of its Hotel Sustainability Basics (Basics) program by over Five Thousand properties spanning more than 80 nations.

Properties throughout key regions, including Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Asia-Pacific, have implemented the Basics, which continues to garner international endorsement, including new collaborations in prominent tourism markets like Japan, the Philippines, and India.

The Basics program, an independent verification initiative, is managed by esteemed evaluators Green Key and SGS. It is designed to assist hoteliers in their preliminary efforts toward better sustainability, ensuring strict adherence to standards and enhancing credibility.

The initiative provides a robust 12-step plan for hotels, focusing on diminishing carbon footprints, optimizing energy and water use, improving waste management, and ensuring that local communities profit from hotel activities.

Prominent hotel conglomerates such as Jin Jiang, Louvre Hotels Group, Choice Hotels, Radisson Hotel Group, and Accor have integrated the Basics into their operations.

In Japan, the national tourism board has joined forces with the GTC through its Japan Sustainable Tourism Initiative (JSTi) to facilitate the Basics’ introduction nationwide, starting with a pilot program before a broader rollout to all Japanese lodging facilities.

In the Philippines, the Tajara Hospitality Group and Greenview have collaborated with GTC to introduce Basics at the annual PhilHost event, dedicated to sustainable hospitality.

The initiative is also poised to grow throughout India with the backing from GTC members such as The Indian Hotels Company Limited, Radisson India, GTC India Initiative, Hotel Association of India, and leading online travel agency MakeMyTrip.

Travel + Leisure has become an official proponent, helping to propel the Hotel Sustainability Basics across its extensive network of over 245 locations.

To accommodate global demand, the Basics program has been made accessible in various languages, including English, French, Spanish, and Japanese, offering extensive resources to a worldwide audience.

Julia Simpson, President & CEO of GTC, remarked, “The GTC’s Hotel Sustainability Basics represents a concerted effort to foster sustainable practices within the hospitality sector. This achievement of more than Five Thousand verified properties is not merely a milestone; it reflects the sector’s commitment to adopting sustainable practices on a global scale. This initiative brings together hotels, industry partners, and sustainability standards to forge a sustainable, accountable, and environmentally conscious future.”

Additionally, independent hotel management entities and distinctive accommodation providers have begun their sustainability journeys by meeting the Basics criteria. Among them, Aleph Hospitality, the leading independent hotel management company in the Middle East and Africa, and Sanctuary Retreats by Abercrombie and Kent, a provider of luxury African safari lodges, have entered their second year of verification.

The Basics program has also secured endorsements from diverse global destinations, including the Caribbean, Mauritius, Colombia, UAE, Azerbaijan, Mexico, and Ecuador, marking a crucial advancement for the Travel & Tourism sector. The GTC continues to lead the industry toward a more sustainable and accountable future.
